| DESCRIPTION Latro is of average height and weight, built somewhat muscularly, with blue eyes and dark hair he keeps completely shaved. He's incredibly vain, so he likes to look good, dressing in suits or dress pants with a button down shirt; t-shirts and jeans are simply beneath him. He wears no jewelry except for a thick, carved brass ring on his right ring finger; he wears it because it hurts like a sonofabitch when he punches you. PERSONALITY Latro takes after his father, a sadistic man who takes what he wants, when he wants it. Utterly selfish and incapable of trusting anyone, Latro is extremely lonely, but he has no idea what that empty feeling deep in his gut is; all he knows is it's always been there. He's devoted his life to one-upping his father in every possible way, including making their family more important to the Unseelie court than it is under Malus' patriarchy. He despises his father more than anyone else in the world, though he really doesn't know why. Most of Latro's activities include the running of several illegal businesses, including arms dealing and heavy involvement in the slave trade. Rarely does he dabble in anything legal, and when he doesn, it's usually at least unethical. As a damer, he keeps several enslaved animal familiars, including a red fox that often offers him advice; the two are quite hostile to one another, but the fox's advice has never steered him wrong yet. This naturally has made Latro paranoid, he thinks the fox is trying to lull him into a sense of security, and he's just waiting for the little creature to turn on him. He tried letting it go once, just to rid himself of the constant paranoia, but the damn thing wouldn't leave, so he trapped it again. Latro has no respect whatsoever for women; he treats them like toys to be played with for a while, and then tossed in the trash once he gets bored. Many of his women end up being sold as slaves, and many others wind up addicted to something or another; consider yourself lucky if you're sent away with just a wounded pride and a few rope burns. The exception to this rule is a firebird he bought from a fellow slaver; he keeps her in a massive golden bird cage in his house. STRENGTHS He's a clever boy, and very charming. Latro doesn't outwardly seem that awful, unless you know him well; it's fairly easy for him to lull strangers into a sense of trust, making it no trouble to then corner them. He's clever and a natural-born leader; he's become quite successful in various criminal enterprises and he's slithering his way up the ladder in the Unseelie court. WEAKNESSES He despises everyone, absolutely everyone, and isn't afraid to burn bridges, ruin lives, and crush his opponents without a second thought. He's incapable of trusting anyone and tends to either overestimate himself or underestimate his enemies. HISTORY Malus Estas is a minor nobleman of the Unseelie court, married to a woman who could not bear children. Desperate for an heir, Malus went looking for a likely mother; unable to find one among his own people, he eventually found Annalise, a tamer desperate for a break in life. Annalise grew up poor, and while she was a sunny, gentle woman, she had strong survival instincts that had led her into some serious trouble, so when Malus offered her a way out, she leapt at the chance. Pity Malus is a cold, calculating son of a bitch. Annalise's life became a living hell; she quickly realized that she was a prisoner, nothing more than a tool for Malus to use. She was little better than a whore, or a dog, and everyone in the household, from Malus and his wife to the scullery maids, made sure she knew it. She was locked up, tortured both psychologically and sometimes physically, and fed all manner of drugs, she endured countless rituals and spells, all meant to ensure the quick birth of a male child. And finally he came; despite the fact that this child was the spitting image of his father, Annalise loved her son from the beginning. So naturally, Malus could not allow her to have anything to do with him. Malus had always intended to raise Latro as his wife's son, but he had planned to send Annalise away after the birth, forbidden to return. That was a delightful plan, but when he saw the love in her eyes as she gazed at her boy, he knew it was much better to keep her around. Latro understood from a young age that Annalise was his mother, and he frequently witnessed the humiliations and tortures she endured from everyone; as he aged, he would occasionally participate. Malus and Dina behaved as though he was their legitimate heir, and though there was some grumbling, the Unseelie court chose to recognize him as such; he was naturally an ill-tempered and malicious boy, and under Malus he became an utter sadist. It should be noted that Latro had superb instincts, and he knew deep down that the only person he knew who actually cared about him was his mother, Annalise. This baffled him, and on those rare occasions when he contributed to her misery, he never quite knew how he felt about it; this annoyed him greatly. As an adult, he came to form a sort of mother x son relationship with Annalise, something that infuriated Malus and led him to finally banish Annalise. Before he got around to that though, Annalise had managed to teach her son one very important thing that she deeply regrets. As a tamer, Annalise had deep respect for the free will of animals. In an attempt to connect with Latro and give him an ounce of decency, she taught him all about using the powers of a tamer, which he had inherited from her. Unfortunately, he simply couldn't grasp the concept of respecting another life form, and he quickly devolved into a damer. |
